Stop the execution of 49 juvenile offenders in Iran - Amnesty International Australia

Stop the execution of 49 juvenile offenders in Iran - Amnesty International Australia

Stop the execution of 49 juvenile offenders in Iran

Iran has the shameful status of being the world’s leading executioner of juvenile offenders.

Under Iranian criminal law, girls as young as nine and boys as young as 15 may be tried as adults and sentenced to death.

Despite an absolute ban under international law, there are currently
49 young offenders awaiting execution for crimes they committed when
they were under the age of 18.

Last year authorities executed four child offenders, reaching a total of 73 cases over the past decade.

Among those on death row is Razieh Ebrahimim, a child bride sentenced
to death for killing her husband. As a result of our calls and an
immense public outcry Iranian authorities halted the execution and
allowed a retrial. We are awaiting the outcome.

We can push the authorities again and insist they take steps to
commute the death sentences of all the juvenile offenders on death row.

Join our call on the Iranian Head of the Judiciary to abolish the
use of the death penalty against all child offenders immediately.
