Big Brother Watch - WhatsApp and Facebook Data Sharing - Unanswered Questions - TruePublica

By Big Brother Watch
– The recent news that WhatsApp will be sharing user information with
Facebook has been greeted with concern by both privacy groups and the
media.

Having long campaigned for companies to be open about their data
sharing practices, it would be churlish of us to not acknowledge that
WhatsApp have made efforts to do so, signalling to all through a well-publicised blog post their main intentions and how to opt out the data sharing.

However there are still clear issues with WhatsApp’s new privacy
policy. When first shown the new terms and conditions, a user is
presented with a large “Agree” option while the opt out requires
clicking through to read more before unchecking a box. The option to opt
in, rather than to opt out of the data sharing service would have been
preferable.

The demise of Gawker shows that the greatest impediment to media democracy isn’t the state—it’s the rich & powerful.

"Of course, Gawker tended toward sensationalistic
and tawdry coverage. But it was also capable of hard-hitting reporting,
and its irreverence allowed it to offer sorely needed scrutiny of the
powerful and famous. It inhabited a niche where at least some degree of
independent journalism was possible (see, for instance, its exposure of
the David Petraeus scandal).

"Then along came Peter Thiel. A Silicon Valley libertarian billionaire,
Thiel sought vengeance for an earlier piece in Gawker about his
sexuality. He bankrolled a lawsuit by Hulk Hogan, forcing the outlet
into bankruptcy and single-handedly blowing the Gawker model out of the
water. As former Gawker features editor Tom Scocca succinctly put it,
the news site folded simply because 'one wealthy person maliciously set
out to destroy it, spending millions of dollars in secret' — making
clear, Scocca concluded, that there’s 'no freedom in this world but
power and money.'"

In 2013, biologist Dr. Brian Hooker received a call from a Senior
Scientist at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
who led the agency’s 2004 study on the Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR)
vaccine and its link to autism.

The scientist, Dr. William
Thompson, confessed that the CDC had omitted crucial data in their final
report that revealed a causal relationship between the MMR vaccine and
autism. Over several months, Dr. Hooker records the phone calls made to
him by Dr. Thompson who provides the confidential data destroyed by his
colleagues at the CDC.

Dr. Hooker enlists the help of Dr. Andrew
Wakefield, the British gastroenterologist falsely accused of starting
the anti-vax movement when he first reported in 1998 that the MMR
vaccine may cause autism. In his ongoing effort to advocate for
children’s health, Wakefield directs this documentary examining the
evidence behind an appalling cover-up committed by the government agency
charged with protecting the health of American citizens.

Interviews with pharmaceutical insiders, doctors, politicians, and
parents of vaccine-injured children reveal an alarming deception that
has contributed to the skyrocketing increase of autism and potentially
the most catastrophic epidemic of our lifetime.

US Cultural Colonisation in Asia Pacific | New Eastern Outlook

US Cultural Colonisation in Asia Pacific | New Eastern Outlook

"Just as the Roman Empire did two millennia ago, the United States is
today recruiting cadres of young people from across Southeast Asia,
indoctrinating them into America's hegemonic networks and sending these cadres back to their home countries to culturally colonise them.

Instead of building up media platforms, institutions and NGOs based on
local values, culture and the best interests of the people living in
Southeast Asia, these cadres, with "seed funding" provided through both
the US State Department and the YSEALI itself, will be building networks
that serve US special interests, locked directly into the very
institutions and networks YSEALI alumni met and worked with during their
various fellowships.

Empire has not died. It has simply evolved,
with much of that evolution being superficial and the underlying
networks and methods remaining nearly indistinguishable to those
employed by the Romans, British and even by 19th century American
"Manifest Destiny."

Empire has not died because the fundamental
aspects of human nature; greed, the need to dominate, avarice and all
other negative qualities associated with absolute power corrupting
absolutely have not changed. No matter how progressive the US attempts
to dress up its "fellowships," the YSEALI and other programmes like it
will continue to be spoken of by those who are drawn into them as
"civilisation" when in fact they are only a "feature of their
enslavement.""

The Changing Faces of Europe - "In One Generation, Europe Will Be Unrecognisable" - TruePublica

The Changing Faces of Europe - "In One Generation, Europe Will Be Unrecognisable" - TruePublica

By Graham Vanbergen
– The official statistician of the European Union ‘Eurostat’ confirms
the worries of many millions of European’s when it comes to immigration,
and The Gates Institute pulls no punches in what it has to say about it.

“Deaths that exceed births might sound like science fiction, but
they are now Europe’s reality. It just happened. During 2015, 5.1
million babies were born in the EU, while 5.2 million persons died,
meaning that the EU for the first time in modern history recorded a
negative natural change in its population. The numbers come from Eurostat , which since 1961 has been counting Europe’s population.”

Breaking down some of these numbers and a new picture emerges from
the official statistician. For instance, whatever population is rising,
is only rising because of immigration.  That particular figure showed
growth by immigration of two million persons in just one year. The Gates
Institute goes on to say that – “Europe has lost the will to
maintain or grow its own population. The situation is as demographically
as seismic as during the Great Plague of the 14th Century. In one
generation (about 20 years), Europe will be unrecognizable.

"The most likely scenario - should the majority of Kurdish armed
groups maintain this current course - sees them being used to divide and
destroy Syria, creating enduring chaos they themselves will be exposed to.

This, by necessity will lead to heavy reliance upon outside support to
survive in that chaos leading to the creation for all intents and
purposes of a Kurdish-version of Israel - a stunted faux-state
perpetually dependent on Western support and ruled through corrupt proxy
regimes unrepresentative of the people they presume governance over. It
is a future of perpetual war with Turkey, whatever remains of Syria and
Iraq, and a growing conflict with Iran driven not by genuine Kurdish

Western designs to undermine and topple Iranian power and institutions
and reassert Western hegemony across the region."

TTIP Has Failed Says German Economic Minister

Is the Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) dead in
the water? If so it's a massive victory over the corporate power grab.

TTIP Has Failed Says German Economic Minister

"Everything has stalled," German Vice Chancellor and Economic Minister Sigmar Gabriel said. (Photo: Garry Knight/flickr/cc)

The UK-based economic justice group Global Justice Now celebrated Gabriel's comments. Kevin Smith, a spokesperson for the group, said:

The fact that TTIP has failed is testament to the hundreds of thousands of people who took to the streets to protest against it, the three million people who signed a petition calling for it to be scrapped, and the huge coalition of civil society groups, trade unions and activists who came together to stop it. TTIP would have resulted in a massive corporate power grab, and sovereign democracies across the E.U. would have been deeply compromised.
We’re still not out of the woods in terms of dealing the E.U.'s legacy of toxic trade deals. CETA, the free trade deal between Canada and the E.U. has already been ratified, and if the European Parliament passes it, it will come into effect before the U.K. parliament has had any chance to vote on it. So many of the controversial elements of TTIP would effectively come in through the back door with CETA, and people across Europe are already mobilizing in large numbers to stop this attempted corporate coup just like they have done with TTIP.

Jewish Settlements Draw Home Buyers - WSJ

Jewish Settlements Draw Home Buyers - WSJ

Maddening. "Israel has said that settlements aren’t an impediment to a
two-state solution because many of them could be exchanged for Israeli
territory in a future deal." In what future is this real?

If you don't have access here's the whole thing:

By RORY JONES and ORR HIRSCHAUGE
Aug. 8, 2016 7:47 p.m. ET

KFAR TAPUACH, West Bank—The first time Michal Ronen traveled to her
rental apartment in this Jewish settlement in the occupied Palestinian
territories, a firebomb struck her bus.

“I was so hysterical,” she said. “I thought that happens every time.”

Now Ms. Ronen and her husband are looking to buy a home in Kfar Tapuach.

The eagerness of Israelis to own a home on disputed land is an
increasingly important political and financial barrier to a
comprehensive Israeli-Palestinian peace based on two neighboring states,
critics of settlement expansion say.

Israel has said that
settlements aren’t an impediment to a two-state solution because many of
them could be exchanged for Israeli territory in a future deal.

Prices are rising faster in many Jewish settlements than in major cities
such as Jerusalem and Tel Aviv because of strong demand from Israeli
home buyers. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government is
increasing the incentives for settlers, despite objections from the U.S.
and other world powers to expanding the settlements.

Israel
would almost certainly have to compensate settlers for moving from any
land included in a future Palestinian state, according to researchers at
the Tel Aviv-based Macro Center for Political Economics. That would
amount to billions of dollars, depending on the number of settlers who
had to relocate, the center estimated.

About 370,000 Jewish
settlers live in the West Bank, and an additional 200,000 live in East
Jerusalem on land Israel captured from Jordan in the 1967 war, according
to Peace Now, a nongovernmental organization that monitors settlement
construction. Israel recognizes 130 settlements in the West Bank, and
considers roughly 100 other outposts of Jewish settlers in the West Bank
illegal.

he settler population is growing faster than the
Israeli population as a whole. The Jewish population in the West Bank
grew 25% in the five years through the end of 2014, compared with 10% in
Israel, according to data from the country’s Central Bureau of
Statistics.

But housing construction hasn’t kept pace. Mr.
Netanyahu has limited new construction in the larger West Bank
settlements to a certain degree, under pressure from the Obama
administration and the international community.

As a result,
housing prices in some of the larger settlements have risen at a faster
rate than in Israeli cities, according to data from the Israel Tax
Authority collected and analyzed by Mesilaty Haim Real Estate Appraisal
Co. Ltd., an Israel-based real-estate firm.

The market in the
settlements also has been affected by a housing shortage in Israel, as
contractors have built far fewer units than required to meet population
growth in recent years, according to real-estate agents and an Israeli
official.

In Kfar Tapuach, where Ms. Ronen lives, the price of
land has more than tripled in the past five years, according to data
from Israel-based property website Madlan.

A July report from the
Quartet for the Middle East peace process, which comprises the U.N.,
the U.S., Russia and the European Union, criticized the settlements as
one of the chief obstacles to peace between Israel and Palestinians.

Mr. Netanyahu responded to the report, which came amid an increase in
Palestinian violence against Israeli settlers, by approving construction
of hundreds of new houses in East Jerusalem, where Palestinians want to
establish a future capital, and the nearby West Bank settlement of
Ma’ale Adumim.

The West Bank appeals to Israelis because the
houses are often larger, it is close to major cities, the schools are
sometimes better and everyday life can be more affordable, according to
real-estate agents. Some settlers are also ideologically driven to
settle what they consider to be ancestral Jewish land.

Settlements get financial support from the government for education,
services and the like, above and beyond what goes to other local
governments. That additional funding has increased 31% since Mr.
Netanyahu’s current administration came to power last year, to 18,000
shekels ($4,600) a year for each household, according to the Macro
Center for Political Economics.

In Efrat, a settlement 10 miles
south of Jerusalem, hundreds of people are on a waiting list to buy a
home in the community, said Mayor Oded Revivi, who also serves as chief
international liaison for the Yesha Council, a group that represents
settlements. “Today, the majority of the population moved because of
financial reasons,” he said.

Residents of Kfar Tapuach, a
settlement of roughly 200 families near the Palestinian city of Nablus,
said house prices have benefited from the growth of a university in the
nearby settlement of Ariel.

Ms. Ronen said she and her husband,
Yuval, moved to the settlement because Mr. Ronen studies engineering at
the university. They live there with their three children. “We now
really want to buy a house,” she said, adding that they say it has to be
now because prices are “going up crazy.”

Iraq 2015/2016

The human
rights situation continued to deteriorate. Government security
forces, government-allied militias and the armed group Islamic
State (IS) committed war crimes and human rights abuses. Government
forces carried out indiscriminate attacks on areas under IS
control, and committed extrajudicial executions. IS forces carried
out mass execution-style killings and abductions, including
abductions of women and girls for sexual slavery. Government
authorities held thousands of detainees without trial; torture and
other ill-treatment of detainees remained rife. Many trials did not
meet international standards of fairness. Women and girls faced
discrimination and sexual and other violence. Journalists operated
in hazardous conditions. Courts continued to impose death
sentences, mostly on terrorism charges; dozens of executions were
carried out.

Iraq: ‘Islamic State’ atrocities fuelled by decades of reckless arms trading

Decades of poorly regulated arms flows into Iraq as well as lax
controls on the ground have provided the armed group calling itself
Islamic State (IS) with a large and lethal arsenal that is being used to
commit war crimes and crimes against humanity on a massive scale in
Iraq and Syria, Amnesty International said in a new report today.

Drawing on expert analysis of thousands of verified videos and images, Taking Stock: The arming of Islamic State
catalogues how IS fighters are using arms, mainly looted from Iraqi
military stocks, which were manufactured and designed in more than two
dozen countries, including Russia, China the USA and EU states.

Iraq: Taking stock: The arming of Islamic State

By Amnesty International, , Index number: MDE 14/2812/2015

The armed group calling itself Islamic State (IS) deploys a
substantial arsenal of arms and ammunition, designed or manufactured in
more than 25 countries. Their military campaign has relentlessly
targeted civilians with small arms, artillery fire and improvised
explosive devices. This report catalogues the array of weapons,
ammunition and other military equipment observed in the possession of
IS. Supplier states and the Iraqi authorities urgently need to implement
far stricter controls on the transfer, storage and deployment of arms
to avoid further proliferation to armed groups and abuses of human
rights.
